Tuoni is an ancient Finnish deity and the ruler of Tuonela, a realm for the dead.
He is described to be wearing a hat, mittens and rains, and has the chains of Manala are around his neck. He is described to sit on either a iron stool or golden chair.
He is married to Tuonetar, the Queen of the Underworld and the Virgin of Death, with whom he has fathered the deities Kivutar, Vammatar, Kalma and Loviatar.
He is known to have a beautiful daughter, who attracts many young mortal men to Tuonela, seeking to marry her. Touni would allow the suitor to take her as bride, if the young man passes through certain trials. These trials would consist of walking on axes and bathing in a fiery sauna. If the suitor managed to complete the tasks, he would be allowed to take the daughter of Tuoni as his bride and leave Tuonela
Sadly the world of the living is not a place for the daughter of Tuoni, who feels a lot of pain in her heart and would start to rot away. The suitor tries to get help from a witch or a wise man, but it will always be too late, with the daughter always dying. The suitor usually commits suicide after this.
The old Finnish shaman often dread to use the name of Tuoni in their incantations, even if the spells are about raising the dead.
