Tapio ruled over a kingdom called Tapiola, and was married to the goddess Mielikki and is the father of AnnikkiTellervoTuulikki, Tyytikki and Nyyrikki. He was served by lesser elf-like spirits who tented to his kingdom as well as the forests. He was also often prayed to for hunting-luck.

The god is sometimes described as a man whose beard is of wood and eyes resemble two deep lakes.
