Atum

Atum, also known as Atoum, Atem or Tem, is a creator and sun god from Egyptian mythology. His female counterpart is Iusaaset.

Overview[]

According to the creation story of Heliopolis, Atum (or Ra) originated from the water of Nun, being the first of the gods and the progenitor of all other deities. He sired the gods Shu and Tefnut, who became the gods of wind and rain. At some point Atum got separated from his children, but eventually found them again, which led him to cry in joy and the tears would become the first humans.

Atum and his children would continued to expand the universe, with Shu and Tefnut having children of their own, Geb and Nut, who were the land and the sky. These two then sired the next generation of deities: OsirisIsisNephthys and Set, who ruled over the humans as the first royal family. Atum also fathered the three goddesses BastetSekhmet and Hathor.
